AirBaltic ‘first airline to sell cars onboard’

By Charlotte Turner |

The Latvian national airline airBaltic has announced that it will be the first airline in the world to sell cars onboard.

Starting December 16, 2011 passengers onboard airBaltic flights will have the opportunity to purchase custom designed Mini Coopers.

Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic made these comments: “AirBaltic is the world’s first airline to start selling cars onboard. Naturally, we still believe that flying is smarter than driving whenever possible, and that is why we will offer the airBaltic Mini in a stylish aircraft livery, chosen by the most active of our 60 000-plus Facebook fans.”

Passengers wishing to purchase the car, pay €50 on any airBaltic flight to receive a voucher. After landing, the passenger visits www.airbalticshop.com and completes the purchase.

The passenger will then receive a call from an airBaltic representative and be invited to see the car and take a test drive and choose payment or leasing options.

The Mini Cooper R56 model price is €24 699. It has a 1.6-litre, 120hp petrol engine and an automatic gearbox. The car will be available for purchase aboard all airBaltic flights from December 16, 2011 until January 15, 2012. See full specifications at http://www.airbalticshop.com/en/airbalticmini.

AirBalticBag, airBaltic shoe, roses onboard, BalticBike are other products that airBaltic has recently introduced; in each case airBaltic claims that it was the first airline in the world to come up with such an initiative.
